Christine Slack RN, BSN,MSN, APRN, NP-C, CFNC

Utilizing over 20 years of nursing experience, Christine has leveraged my expertise to manage a legal nurse consulting firm. Holding licenses as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner, along with certification as a Legal Nurse Consultant, she brings a wealth of qualifications to the practice. In her previous role as a Clinical Documentation Specialist, Christine responsibilities involved meticulously dissecting medical records to enhance reimbursement procedures. Christine possesses a versatile background encompassing substantial experience in both inpatient and outpatient healthcare settings, coupled with a profound understanding of the intricate operations in each setting. Christine commenced her professional journey as a Registered Nurse, where she honed her skills across diverse fields such as Medical-Surgical, Hematology/Oncology, Oncology Infusion, Cardiovascular, Orthopedic, and Clinical Documentation before progressing to attain the title of Family Nurse Practitioner. Transitioning into the role of a Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner marked a pivotal point in her career, where she undertook the critical task of evaluating patients in the Emergency Department for potential hospital admission. Frequently Asked Questions:

WHAT EXACTLY IS A FORENSIC LEGAL NURSE CONSULTANT?

  • Typically a Forensic Legal Nurse Consultant (FLNC) is a Registered Nurse, meaning that they have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. But occasionally, as in my situation, the LNC will be a Nurse Practitioner.
  • A Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse that has gone back to school and obtained either a Master's Degree or a Doctorate Degree in Nursing. The largest difference between the two roles is that the Nurse Practitioner is legally permitted to diagnose a patient, order tests/labs/imaging and prescribe medications -- duties normally performed by physicians -- whereas Registered Nurses cannot.
  • A FLNC can assist the attorney in bridging the gap in knowledge. While an attorney is an expert on legal issues, Nurses and Nurse Practitioners are experts on nursing, medicine and the healthcare system. Just like the legal world -- medical professionals speak their own special language and physicians document in their own designated format.
  • Our responsibility is to make sure that the standards of care have been met, conduct medical or health related research, screen for merit and deliver a medical opinion on healthcare related issues and evaluate the evidence (medical records), analyze it meticulously, assist with discovery by pointing you in the right direction.
  • A FLNC can assist with obtaining expert witnesses (or act as one themselves).
  • A FLNC can also attend an Independent Medical Exam.

WHAT CAN A LEGAL NURSE CONSULTANT ADD TO THE TEAM THAT MY PARALEGAL ISN'T ALREADY DOING?

  • Paralegals are a very valuable part of the legal team.  But, it wouldn't be prudent for a Nurse Practitioner to review law documents for accuracy prior to starting trial so why would you want to trust valuable medical records to someone who doesn't have the experience to know what they're reading. They'll never duplicate our medical knowledge. They'll never duplicate our years of training and clinical experience.
  • It's not unheard of for hospitals, nursing homes or doctors office to leave out important documents. Will your paralegal know what records should be there? Which ones aren't pertinent?
  • Chrono

"I FEEL AS IF I ALREADY HAVE A PRETTY STRONG CASE. HOW WOULD I BENEFIT BY ADDING A LEGAL NURSE CONSULTANT TO MY TEAM?"

As mentioned above, how certain are you that you have uncovered all of the facts, to not only win your case, but to maximize the results? I am a Nurse AND Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years of clinical experience behind me. Not only do I know what to look for from the nurse's perspective but I also the unique knowledge of being able to view the situation and records from the provider's (doctor) perspective.  Legal Nurse Consultants can find that proverbial needle in a haystick. We can pull together all the "meaningless" information to see the bigger picture. Each piece alone might not seem significant put them all together and the picture, and prognosis, changes. This could make or break a case. Turn a small settlement into a substantial settlement. At times we may find something you didn't want to find but by finding it prior to trial, you'll be able to prepare yourself in advance and avoid being blindsided.
